Manchester's Alternative Scene This August: A MoshRadar Guide

Forget the festival-pop headlines for a second — Manchester's underground has its own August lined up, and it's a properly heavy one. From grindcore in the back room of the Grafton Arms to a goth aftershow the moment The Cure walk off stage at Wythenshawe Park, here's what's worth tracking on MoshRadar this month if punk, metal, post-punk or anything adjacent is your scene.

Saturday 1 August – Fluorescents, Star & Garter (Stockport)

Kicking the month off is a punk bill at one of the region's most dependable rooms for it. The Star & Garter has quietly become a second home for Manchester's rock and metal scene, and this is a solid way to start an August of gigs without leaving the M60.

Monday 3 August – Chepang, Grafton Arms

US grindcore/experimental outfit Chepang land at the Grafton Arms — not a night for the faint-hearted, but exactly the kind of underground booking that makes Manchester's scene worth following closely rather than just catching the arena tours.

Saturday 15 August – The Click Clacks, Aatma

A mid-month punk date at Aatma, one of the smaller rooms doing the heavy lifting for DIY and touring underground acts passing through the city.

Thursday 20 August – Stigmata Presents: The Official Infest Warm Up Party, Rebellion

Rebellion goes full goth/EBM/post-punk/industrial/darkwave for this one, with Clan of Xymox playing an exclusive UK show alongside Massive Ego, Dead Lights, Moth Slut, Strange Futures and IAMIMPERFECT. If Infest festival is on your radar, this is the Manchester pre-party.

The Cure, Wythenshawe Park

Later in August, the Live From Wythenshawe Park series brings The Cure to South Manchester as part of their run of huge outdoor shows this summer — a genuinely rare chance to catch them at scale in the city, and reason enough on its own to build a weekend around.

Friday 21 August – Stigmata: The Cure Aftershow Party, Rebellion

No prizes for guessing where a chunk of the Cure's Wythenshawe Park crowd end up once the show empties out. Rebellion's aftershow runs 11pm–4am the night after — book ahead, because a crowd that size isn't queuing politely for long.

Saturday 22 August – Tape It Shut, Bank Top Tavern (Oldham)

Proof the scene isn't confined to the city centre — Oldham's Bank Top Tavern gets its own punk night this month.

Monday 25 August – Violet Grohl, Deaf Institute

Dave Grohl's daughter brings a performance of her debut album to the Deaf Institute — leaning more alt-rock than metal, but a genuinely interesting one for anyone who likes their gigs with a bit of lineage and buzz behind them.

Sunday 30 August – TVOD, Castle Hotel

Rounding out the month, the Castle Hotel — long one of the Northern Quarter's best bets for guitar music that isn't trying to fill an arena — hosts TVOD.

Bank Holiday Sunday, 31 August – The Prodigy, Wythenshawe Park

Not a metal show in the traditional sense, but The Prodigy's Wythenshawe Park date is the one crossover booking the alternative scene will be talking about all month. Expect the usual arsenal of classics, plus a bonus set from D&B legend Andy C and — genuinely worth the ticket alone for the heavier crowd — a special old-school hardcore techno set from Carl Cox.
