Band logo fonts

Thirty-four display faces for band logos, every one open-licence, each shown here on a band name. They are grouped by the kind of band they suit, but nothing stops a doom band picking the punk marker. Pick one and the band logo maker sets your name in it, then grows thorns, roots or drips out of the letters if you want them, and hands you the PNG and the SVG.

How to pick one

Start from what the band sounds like rather than what looks hardest. Blackletter and Fraktur read as black metal and folk at a glance; Spiked and Rocker as thrash and the classic eighties records; Gore, Eaten and Butcher as death metal and horror; the markers and spray paints as punk and DIY; the heavy blocks and the stencil as hardcore. Then check it at the size people will meet it: a logo is judged as a profile picture before it is ever a back patch, so set your own name in it and look at it small.

A face is the start of a logo, not the whole of one. Real metal logos are drawn, and no font gets there on its own, which is why the logo maker grows thorns, roots, vines and drips out of the real outlines of your letters, warps the word into horns or a bridge, and lets you move, resize and turn any letter. The small line underneath can be set in a second face.

What the licences let you do

Every face here is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 or the Apache License 2.0. Neither puts any condition on the artwork you make with a font, so the logo is yours: print it on shirts, patches, records and posters, and sell them. What the licences protect is the font files themselves, which is why the logo maker never sends them to your browser and why its SVG holds outlines rather than live type.
