How can you tell if a band is AI-generated?
1. Do they play live?
This is the one that matters. Generated acts do not book venues, sell tickets and turn up. Every AI act exposed so far shared the same shape: real streaming numbers, no shows anywhere, ever. It is also the hardest thing to fake, because a gig leaves a trail — listings, tickets, a venue that remembers.
It is the check almost nobody can run, which is why this tool exists here: we list 24,446 gigs and the acts playing them, so we can look.
2. When does the back catalogue start?
Generative music tools only became usable around 2023–24. Releases older than that were made the hard way. An act whose entire discography appeared in the last eighteen months is not proof of anything — every band starts somewhere — but combined with volume it starts to mean something.
3. How fast is the catalogue growing?
Writing, recording and mixing a record takes months. Generating one takes an afternoon. Eight albums in a year is not a working pace for a band.
4. Do the tracks all run to the same length?
Generated tracks cluster around whatever length the model produces. A real record has a ninety-second interlude and an eight-minute closer. Scatter is a sign of people making decisions.
5. Plays without followers
Playlist placement delivers listeners who never chose the act. A band with real reach has people who came back and followed. High popularity next to almost no followers is the shape of the former.
6. Do they exist anywhere else?
A real band leaks out of streaming: a Bandcamp, a website, tagged photos, a local promoter's listing, a MusicBrainz entry someone bothered to create. A generated act is often a profile and nothing behind it.
Does Spotify label AI artists?
Since September 2026 Spotify shows an AI Persona badge where the artist identity is AI-generated, and keeps those acts out of algorithmic and editorial playlists. It depends on disclosure, so an undisclosed act can still pass — which is the gap this checker covers.
How much music on streaming is AI-generated?
Deezer reported in 2025 that 28% of daily uploads were AI-generated, and more recently put the figure at 44% of newly uploaded music. Whatever the exact number, the direction is not in doubt — which is why "is this band real?" went from a strange question to a normal one inside two years.
Why we won't just tell you yes or no
Because we would sometimes be wrong, and being wrong here means publicly calling a working band a fake. Every signal above is circumstantial. We will tell you plainly when an act is real — we listed the shows — but we will not accuse one of being generated on the strength of metadata.
