Naming a band without regretting it
A generator gets you past the blank page. It cannot tell you which name you will still want on a poster in three years, so here is what actually matters once you have a shortlist.
Say it out loud, to someone else
Every name has to survive being shouted across a bar and typed into a search box by someone who heard it once. If it needs spelling out, it costs you word-of-mouth ticket sales for as long as the band exists. Deliberate misspellings and stray punctuation are the usual culprits.
Search it before you love it
Two acts sharing a name is not illegal, but it is expensive — you split the search results, the streaming profiles get merged, and promoters book the other one by mistake. Run anything you like through the band name checker, which searches Spotify and our own artist database for exact and near matches. Then check Bandcamp, the trademark registers, and whether the social handles are free.
Check it fits

How does the band name generator work?
Each genre gets its own hand-written word bank instead of one shared pool filtered by tone — a shared pool kept producing "Velvet Grindcore" and "Sunlit Necrosis", which are grammatical and tonally nonsense. Those words are mixed with a set of complete, written-out names so the list does not read as one template repeated 24 times.
Are generated band names free to use?
Yes — nothing here is trademarked by us and you owe us nothing for using one. What you should do is make sure nobody else got there first: click any name above to run it through the availability checker.
Why do I get the same names when I come back?
The list is stable for a given URL on purpose, so a link you send a bandmate shows them what you saw. "Generate more names" changes the seed in the address bar — and that address will keep showing that set too.
Can I use one of these if a band already has it?
Legally it depends on trademarks and territory, and we cannot advise on that. Practically it is a bad trade: you inherit their search results, their streaming confusion and their bookings. If the checker turns up an active act with the exact name, take a different one — there are 24 genre banks here and more ideas behind every reroll.
